Bowen Therapy

What is Bowen Therapy?

Bowen Therapy is a holistic approach that promotes self-healing and benefits all ages in life. This technique involves stretching the soft connective tissue also known as fascia, which gives a signal to the body to reset and de-flame painful muscles, joints, nerves, and tendons to address pain and alleviate any other symptoms with an underlying cause.

Bowen Therapy is beneficial for patients who have back pain, neck pain, muscle pain, respiratory pain, arthritic pain, Sports injuries, Migraines, TMJ pain, Nerve pain, Fibromyalgia, pains in feet and legs, Chronic fatigue syndrome and others. Bowen Therapy FAQs

  • What can you expect to be included in treatments? Treatment sessions involve hands-on work in the area where you had complaints. The treatment typically lasts between 30 minutes to an hour. In addition, the therapist may leave the room for periods of two to three minutes at a time. Breaks in between the treatment allow the brain a chance to shut out other noise and focus on what just happened: “what just happened?”, “What was that?”, “Was that a sliding technique?”. Furthermore, breaks allow the nervous system to be able to process or potentially make a decision about how to respond about the stimulus.

  • When should you start and how many treatments do you need?  Starting Bowen Therapy is necessary when you are in severe pain, increased sensitivity to pain (impossible to touch the area) or need gentle treatment. The number of treatments will depend on how your body’s response to the first treatment. Typically, a gap of approximately 5-10 days is recommended in between Bowen Therapy sessions.

  • How is this service different from others? Bowen Therapy and other services may address flexibility and pain relief, however, the approach of Bowen Therapy is more gentle and less invasive; and uses only the amount of pressure necessary in order for the nervous system to be stimulated. Appointments are available both in person at our Hamilton clinic and by phone/video appointment sessions. There are some differences between the treatment plans for in-person again virtually so please call ahead prior to booking online if you have questions.
